The novel was given the retro Hugo for best novel in 1954, the most prestigious prize in the science fiction genre. The old mantra collect what you read in school still applies and first edition copies of this landmark novel have strongly appreciated in value over time. Fahrenheit 451 is one of the best known dystopian science fiction novels of the 20th century and is globally read and studied in schools. Professional fortification tape has been applied to the folds on the reverse as shown. It has been price clipped, and as usual is faded on the spine, and somewhat on the front panel. The dust jacket is the correct first issue dust jacket. Clean page block edges, and the boards also show the vibrant red colour with all lettering present and NOT rubbed out. Slight rubbing to edges from sliding in and out of the shelf as usual. The book is internally clean without any previous owner s scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Condition: a near fine book in a very good minus dust jacket. The book is housed in a quality quarter-bound red leather solander case with the title, author and specifications on the spine. Also, notice that the book was signed in 1974 long before Bradbury suffered a stroke after which his handwriting became less legible. As a bookworm, of course the author would be Montag s friend. A superb inscription referring directly to Guy Montag, the book s protagonist. Beautifully signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: For Elaine! In a Fine dust jacket, with absolutely no fading (we have never seen one without fading) two micro-tears to the edge, a minuscule crease to the top corner of the rear panel and trivial rubbing at the folds. Fine, with light ambient toning to the boards, light offsetting to the front free endpaper and contents lightly tanned. Johns-Manville Quinterra asbestos binding, lettered in red. Approximately 50 copies of which were sold in trade dust jackets though not called for, and this is one of those copies. Number 25 of 200 copies with limited issue asbestos binding, hand numbered and signed by Ray Bradbury on the colophon. First edition in perhaps the nicest example of this dust jacket extant in the world today a rarity that practically glows. ![]()
